Samsung Debuts Rollable OLED Display

  Flexible OLED displays are not new anymore at conventions. However, Samsung has taken display flexibility to the next level with a rollable OLED display prototype that the company demonstrated at SID Display Week 2016 in San Francisco. Once unrolled, the display measures 5.7 inches and provides an incredible resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 or 336 pixels per inch. The video below comes from Slashgear and YouTube.

 

  The display rivals the quality on any top-of-the-line smartphone. The rollability makes it ultra-portable. It can be rolled into a metal cylinder with a 1 cm (10mm) radius. It is just 0.3 mm thick. The company managed to deposit the OLED material onto a flexible plastic substrate.

 

 

  Samsung has not perfected the prototype yet. Of course, the company hasn’t said how many times it can be rolled before it no longer functions. Also, there is no interactivity with the display itself. Thus far, there is no way to make a touchscreen that is that flexible. A touch layer would increase its thickness and decrease its flexibility.

 

  A viable product would require several more innovations. Besides the issue of adding a touch layer, the company also has to figure out where to put a battery.

 

  LG debuted a somewhat less impressive rollable OLED display earlier this year.
